The Virgin Islands offer a wide spectrum of charter experiences, from three-hour sunset sails to full week-long sailing vacations. Which one fits depends on how much time you have, what kind of trip you want, and whether the boat is the main event or part of a bigger picture.
Half-day boat trips
Three to four hours, usually one or two stops. Great for a family already staying ashore who wants a taste of the water — a snorkel, a swim, a sunset cruise. The downside: you're racing the clock the whole time, and you skip the anchorages that take an hour to reach.
Full-day boat trips
Six to eight hours, typically three or four stops. This is the most popular format and for good reason — you can reach the BVI border, hit two reefs and a floating bar, and still be home for dinner. Ideal for guests staying in a villa who want one big day on the water.
Multi-night term charters
Four to seven nights. This is the experience that changes how people think about vacationing. You don't pack and unpack daily, you wake up at the next stop, and the boat is your home for the week. It costs more, but it replaces lodging, most meals, and most activities — and it's the only way to see the quieter anchorages that day boats can't reach.
Quick recommendation
If you're staying in a St. John villa and want a single great day on the water, book a full-day boat trip. If your Caribbean trip itself is the goal — the trip you'll be telling people about for years — book a term charter.
